Overseas licence holders
South Australia recognises the driver licensing and testing standards in the countries listed below. If you hold, or have held a driver's licence within the last five years, you are not required to undertake equivalent driving tests in South Australia.
Austria, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guernsey, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Japan, Jersey, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States.
You may be eligible for the equivalent class of licence as your overseas licence. Minimum age requirements apply. If your licence is not from a country listed you will need to apply for a South Australian Drivers licence.
Applying for a South Australian driver's licence
If you hold a full overseas licence and you are aged 19 years or over you must pass the Australian road rules theory test. On completion of this you will be issued a temporary driving permit, which is valid for ONE MONTH ONLY, during which time you are required to pass a practical driving test.
If you do not pass the practical driving test within the one month period you must then apply for a learner's permit and will be subject to learners permit conditions. Beware that to book a driving test may require several weeks notice. Driving tests are only provided by Driving Schools and not all driving schools provide this service.
We are aware that all these steps to go to a South Australian licence may be a little confusing so if you hold a overseas licence we can explain the steps to you, just call DrivEASY Training Centre.
Before applying for a south Australian drivers licence and doing the Australian road rules theory test we generally recommend that you have a lesson with a DrivEASY Instructor who can asses your driving ability and explain in detail the steps and driving requirements you will need to demonstrate to the Examiner in order to pass a Driving Test.
It is important to understand that once you do the Australian Road Rules Theory Test you only have only one month to pass a Driving test. It is not uncommon to have to wait 3 weeks for a booking time during busy periods. If you don’t pass a driving test within that one month period (there are no exceptions) you will need to go to a learners permit and can no longer drive in South Australia except under learners permit conditions. By talking to us first we can get you started before the one month restriction become in effect.
When you have passed these driving tests you will receive a certificate of competency. Present your certificate of competency at a Service SA centre to obtain your South Australian driver's licence. After you have paid the fees and had your photograph taken, you will receive a South Australian driver's licence.
