New Driver’s Licence and Permit Fees

 

The government has increasing licensing fees as of 1 July 2011. New rates that are most likely to effect Learner and Provisional drivers are:

  • Theory Test for Learners Permit $33  
  • Learners permit (first issue) $55
  • Learners Renewal 9 months $32
  • Provisional Licence per year $ 37 plus $17 administration fee
  • Replacement licence $17
  • Hazard Perception Test $29
  • Publications: The Drivers Handbook $10

New Changes for L and P Plate Drivers

From 4 September 2010 new laws for Learner and Provisional Drivers apply. If you do not have a current Learner’s Permit at that time you will need to comply with new and increased conditions to get your Provisional Licence.

 

Learners’s Permits

If you do not obtain your learners permit until after 4th September 2010 you will be required to have 75 hours of supervised driving time (previously 50), including 15 night time hours, and you will not be able to obtain your Provisional licence for 12 months (previously 6 months) if you are under the age of 25.  Drivers that are over 25 years old must hold their Learner’s permit for 6 months only. This will mean that the earliest age that a driver will be able to get their Provisional licence, after 4th September, will be 17 years.

Mobile phone ban for learner's permit & provisional drivers

Why has the mobile phone ban for L and P1 drivers been introduced?

Research has shown that using a mobile phone while driving increases crash risk by at least four times.

Young and inexperienced drivers are at an even greater risk as they are still developing their driving capabilities are more liable to lose concentration and make mistakes when driving. They are also among the most frequent users of mobile phones and it is important that they avoid these risks when they get behind the wheel of a car.
